Walk In Service at Holbrook
The Holbrook office accepts walk ins Monday through Thursday. Hours are 8am to noon and 1pm to 5pm. Just visit during these times. No appointment is needed. Bring your photo ID. If you are requesting someone else's birth certificate, bring documents that prove your relationship to that person. Fill out form VS-11 at the office or download it ahead of time from the county website.
Staff will review your application and documents. If everything is in order, they will process your request while you wait. Most people get their birth certificate the same day within an hour or two. You pay when you pick up the certificate. The whole process is quick if you bring the right documents. Same day service makes the Holbrook office a good choice if you need a birth certificate fast.
Note: Holbrook is closed on Fridays, so plan your visit for Monday through Thursday only.
Appointment Only Service at Show Low
The Show Low office does not accept walk ins. You must call ahead to schedule an appointment. Phone 928-532-6050 during business hours. Staff will ask what service you need and set up a time for you to visit. Bring your photo ID and relationship documents to your appointment. Fill out form VS-11 ahead of time or complete it when you arrive.
Staff will process your request during your appointment if you have all required documents. Service is usually the same day for appointments. The appointment system helps the Show Low office manage their workload. If you live in the Show Low area and need a birth certificate, calling for an appointment is required. Do not just show up at the office, as staff may not be able to help you without a scheduled appointment.
After Hours Drop Boxes
Both Holbrook and Show Low offices have drop boxes. You can use these boxes to submit applications when the office is closed or if you cannot visit during office hours. Fill out form VS-11 at home. Include copies of your ID and relationship documents. Add payment as a money order. Do not put cash or a credit card in the drop box. Credit cards are not accepted by Navajo County, so you must use a money order for drop box and mail requests.
Staff check the drop boxes every business day. Your request will be processed in the order it was received. Processing usually takes a few business days for drop box submissions. The county will call you when your birth certificate is ready. You can then pick it up at the office where you submitted the application, or ask staff to mail it to you. Make sure you write a phone number on your form so staff can reach you.
Birth Certificate Costs and Payment
Certified birth certificates cost $20 each in Navajo County. This matches the standard Arizona state fee. Each additional copy also costs $20. Amendments or corrections cost $30. Acknowledgment of paternity also costs $30 to file. Non-certified copies for genealogy research cost $20 but cannot be used for legal purposes.
Navajo County accepts credit and debit cards with a fee, and money orders. They do not accept cash. They do not accept personal checks. If you visit in person, you can pay by credit or debit card at the counter. A processing fee applies for card payments. For mail and drop box requests, use a money order only. Make the money order payable to Navajo County for the correct amount. Do not send cash or personal checks as they will not be accepted.
Service for Navajo Nation Communities
Navajo County includes parts of the Navajo Nation. Many residents live in areas like Chinle, Ganado, and other communities on the reservation. The Holbrook vital records office serves these communities, though the drive can be long for some residents. If you live in the eastern part of Navajo County near the Apache County line, the Apache County office in St. Johns may be closer. Apache County also provides outreach services to Navajo Nation communities on scheduled dates.
Both Holbrook and Show Low offices have drop boxes that can help if you cannot easily visit in person. Submit your application through the drop box and wait for the county to process it and call you when it is ready. You can then pick it up or ask staff to mail it to you. This saves you from making multiple trips to the office.
Who Can Request Birth Certificates
Arizona law restricts who can get birth certificates. You must be an eligible requester under state statute. The person named on the birth certificate can get their own record if they are 18 or older or an emancipated minor. Parents listed on the certificate can request copies at any time. A spouse can get a copy if they show a marriage certificate. Grandparents, adult children, and adult siblings may request copies if they prove their family relationship to the registrant.
Legal guardians and conservators need a court order showing their authority. Attorneys can request records if they represent an eligible party and provide proof. Government agencies can get copies for official purposes. Some youth age 16 and 17 can request their own birth certificate if they are in DCS custody or homeless. All requesters must show valid photo ID. You also need documents that prove your relationship to the person on the birth certificate unless you are requesting your own record.
Any Arizona Birth Certificate Available
Navajo County connects to the statewide Arizona vital records database. This central system holds all birth records for the state from July 1909 to now. County staff can look up and print a birth certificate for any Arizona birth. You do not have to visit the county where you were born. If you were born in Phoenix but live in Holbrook, the Navajo County office can issue your birth certificate. This statewide access makes vital records more convenient for everyone in Arizona.
All Arizona birth certificates have the same format and security features no matter which county issues them. Each certificate includes a raised seal and the registrar's signature. These features make the document official for use anywhere in the United States or abroad. Schools, employers, passport offices, and government agencies accept birth certificates from any Arizona county as valid proof of birth and identity.
